Carbs Are Not the Enemy

Somewhere along the way, carbohydrates became the villain of modern nutrition. For the past 30 years, we’ve been told that if we want to be lean and healthy, we need to cut carbs and eat more fat.

But how has that advice worked out?

The truth is, the science never really supported eliminating carbohydrates. What it did support was reducing added sugars. And those are not the same thing.

Carbohydrates include a wide spectrum of foods—from vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes to breads, pastries, candy, and honey. Some of these should be eaten freely. Others, in moderation.

Here’s what the research actually shows:

  • The countries with the longest life expectancies (like Japan and many Mediterranean nations) also consume the most carbohydrates.
  • Populations with the highest rates of heart disease and diabetes often eat fewer carbs, not more.
  • Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are consistently associated with lower risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Carbohydrates, when chosen wisely, support energy, health, and longevity. So no, a bacon double cheeseburger without the bun is not healthier than quinoa, broccoli, or an apple.

Let’s stop fearing carbs, and start understanding them. Learn more in my new book, The Carb Reset.
