A Vision for Innovation

When The Ritz-Carlton Residences set out to build its state-of-the-art fitness facility in 2015, it presented an opportunity to redefine what a hotel gym could be. Traditionally, hotel gyms had been cookie-cutter spaces—functional but uninspired. This project was different. As one of the first hotel gyms I had the opportunity to design, my goal was to break away from the conventional approach and bring something new and dynamic to the space.

Although The Ritz-Carlton had brand standards in place, the ownership was incredibly supportive of pushing boundaries. The result was a gym unlike any other at the time—one that prioritized both function and experience in an open-air setting surrounded by lush palm trees.

Designing for a New Fitness Experience

One of the key elements that set this gym apart was the custom Motion Cage Studio, a central unit featuring a functional training tower with a built-in barbell station, cable machine, and interactive training components. At the time, no other hotel gym in the world had a four-sided functional jungle gym like this. Instead of the typical layout where cardio machines lined the perimeter and the center remained empty, we placed this high-impact, multi-user station right in the middle of the gym, instantly energizing the space and encouraging interactive workouts.

The lighting design was another standout feature. Instead of relying on standard, sterile gym lighting, we incorporated modern, innovative lighting solutions that elevated the experience and gave the space a sleek, high-end feel. Every aspect of the design was tailored to create an environment that was not just functional but inspiring.

Crafting a Layout for Every User

The Ritz-Carlton Residences follows a unique condo-hotel model, where each unit is privately owned but can be rented out as a guest suite. This meant that the gym had to cater to a diverse group—long-term residents, vacationing guests, and a range of fitness levels from casual gym-goers to dedicated athletes.

To create a space that met these varying needs, I approached the layout from the perspective of someone who would be using it daily. I asked myself: If I lived here, how would I want my gym to be designed? This led to thoughtful placement of equipment that ensured ease of access and a natural flow. Cardio machines like recumbent bikes were included to accommodate older guests, while more advanced strength training stations provided opportunities for serious athletes.

Beyond the equipment selection, I worked closely with the developer to understand the demographic and cultural factors of the region. Unlike a traditional hotel where guests come and go, The Ritz-Carlton Residences serves as both a luxury retreat and a residential space, requiring a gym that supports both short-term and long-term fitness journeys.

Balancing Luxury and Functionality

Every detail of this gym was designed to reflect the high-end experience expected at the Ritz. The open-air layout allowed guests to train in a space that felt connected to nature, offering a more holistic approach to wellness. One of my favorite touches was the custom green dumbbells, which complemented the lush outdoor surroundings, adding an extra layer of thoughtfulness to the space.

Wellness was also a key consideration. While the focus was on fitness, the space was designed to encourage a sense of balance and rejuvenation, making it more than just a place to exercise—it was an extension of The Ritz-Carlton Residences’ tranquil and luxurious atmosphere.

Overcoming Challenges

Designing something new and different within a well-established brand like the Ritz came with its challenges. Unlike a boutique hotel, where design flexibility is greater, working with a major luxury chain required navigating brand standards while still pushing the envelope. Additionally, construction delays impacted the timeline, a common challenge in large-scale projects. However, the vision remained clear, and by May 2016, the gym was installed and ready to welcome guests.

A Legacy of Innovation

Looking back, I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished with The Ritz-Carlton Residences gym. It set a new standard for what a hotel gym could be, breaking away from the predictable layouts of the past. I’m especially grateful to the project’s owner and developer for their willingness to innovate and trust in my approach.

If there’s one thing I hope guests notice when they step into this space, it’s that fitness in a luxury setting doesn’t have to be an afterthought. It can be an experience—one that energizes, inspires, and integrates seamlessly into their lifestyle, whether they’re visiting for a week or calling The Ritz-Carlton Residences home.
